Self-Drive Boat Hire in Melbourne: The Licence Question and the Rules on the Yarra

Self-drive boat hire in Melbourne: no licence for the slow hire boats, a 5-knot limit, the 0.05 alcohol rule, and boats from US$69 per boat, as of October 2026.

Updated October 2026

You do not need a boat licence to hire a self-drive boat on the Yarra in Melbourne. Safe Transport Victoria requires a marine licence only for hire-and-drive boats capable of more than 10 knots, and the operators here say their self-drive boats need none, on a river with a 5-knot limit. What you do need is a sober driver, a card for the deposit and a little planning, because each boat has its own patch of water. Three self-drive boats are on GetYourGuide, from US$69 per boat, as of October 2026.

The licence rule, from the people who set it

Safe Transport Victoria, which regulates boating in the state, says the Marine Safety Act requires anyone driving a hire-and-drive vessel capable of more than 10 knots (18 km/h) to hold a marine licence. Below that speed, no licence is needed; the hire company has to brief you on how to operate the boat, and everyone on board follows the lifejacket rules.

Each operator here says its self-drive hire needs no licence: GoBoat says no licence or previous boating experience is needed, Aqua Donut says the same and adds that everyone completes a safety briefing first, and Boat-4-Hire says no licence is needed for its hirers on the Yarra.

The speed limit: 5 knots

Parks Victoria is the waterway manager for the Yarra upstream of the port, and the Waterway Rules it applies set a 5-knot speed restriction on the river. The state rules add a 5-knot limit within 50 metres of people in the water, other boats, the bank and any jetty or structure. Five knots is about 9 km/h, a jogging pace, which is why a two-hour hire is a gentle round trip rather than an expedition.

The alcohol rule: the same as on the road

The Victorian Recreational Boating Safety Handbook says anyone 21 and over operating or in charge of a vessel must not be over 0.05% blood or breath alcohol, and anyone under 21 must have none, even with the boat at anchor. GoBoat goes further: up to two standard drinks per person on board, and the nominated skipper stays sober for the whole hire.

If your group wants to drink, book a boat with a skipper; party boat hire compares them.

Before you go

The deposit. GoBoat places a hold of up to A$200 on a debit or credit card, released when the boat is back; bring the card and ID.

The briefing. Every operator here walks you through the controls before you leave the dock. Listen for the turnaround time: at 5 knots, the trip back takes as long as the trip out.

Swimming and fishing. GoBoat does not allow either from its boats.

Weather. Every self-drive hire here cancels free up to 24 hours ahead, and GoBoat will not send boats out in unsafe conditions. GoBoat’s Melbourne boats have no shade, so a hot afternoon calls for hats and water.
